Category: Let's talk
Hey all:
I figure I would create a board for those Zoners who went to Youth Slam 2007 to share experiences, talk about frustrations, or not even post at all. I myself went, and it was a pretty awesome experience, and definitely a lot of fun. I got to meet some pretty amazing people who I am glad to have met and now will keep in touch with. It never occurred to me that some of the people who went I had seen on the zone, and then there were others who I didn't even know had Zone accounts. It also amazes me how small the blind community is when you really get down to thinking about it. In closing, , to my fellow Youth Slammers: SLAM THAT!
damn that sounds fun :). i wished i could have went.
Hi Liz,
Please tell us a little about your experiences.
James K
here here liz! slam that! I was in the journalism track, and there were two chelsea's, but I was the quieter of us, lol. what track were you in?
Youth slamm? What is it? I've never herd of it before.
Hey Chelsea! Yeah, I do remember there being multiple Chelsea's. Where are you from?
As for the track I was in, being a mentor, I helped out with the Computer Science track doing chatbots, which was tons of fun! I loved seeing the kids progress on learning things throughout the week.
Youth Slam was a program put on by the NFB for the first time this past week which introduced careers in science, technology engineering and math to those high school students wishing to pursue such or who might have an interest in such a career. It was also an awesome networking opportunity.
I'm from austin, texas.
I was going to go but I had something else going on at the time. Apparently, they ran out of room for me so I wouldn't have been able to go.
Hi,
I went and I thought it was good, except in the dining room, when you were going to sit down to eat, it was so loud in there that it was hard to find your mentor at the table, when you were carrying your tray. Other than that, I thought it was all right.

I was in air slam. it was freaking _amazing!!! did any of you meet a girl named Jennifer Kellerman? I did, she was cool. LMAO... some of you will get why that was so funny.
I've been meaning to post to this topic for awhile now, and, in fact, i had written up a fairly post on my thoughts of Youth Slam, but by the time I had finished, my login session had timed out and I haven't felt like typing it over again. I participated as a mentor as well, and, like Liz, I helped with the computer science track. I actually worked with the group of researchers who were organizing the chatbot project for several weeks beforehand, which I really enjoyed--I had wanted an introduction to programming for the past year, and I finally had that opportunity! Anyway, it's great to see posts from others of you who were able to attend, and I definitely agree that the dining room situation was definitely confusing and by far my least favorite part of the program! Other than that though, it was definitely an awesome experience for several reasons. I was able to meet a few other Zoners, and hopefully at some point I will be able to meet/talk to others of you who were able to attend!
It was really awesome, and I'm glad I got to go.
Did anyone meet Melissa lomax? She is known as Missy. She is from New Jersey.
I didn't actually meet her, but for some reason her name sounds familiar to me--perhaps I saw it on an e-mail list or other blindness-related resource.
i wish i could have gone as a mentor. maybe next year if they do it again.

Well, went to the slam on the journalism track. You may have hurd me in our little documentarry and a few podcasts! Slam was cool all apart from a few issues. But now we are getting call backs! Moste of us will be returning for a seccond little program in the coming weeks!
Slam that!
Oh...wow...I feel so different typing this, but I'm gonna do it anyway! I didn't think it was all that! I mean, it was just ok! Yeah, sure, I met some cool ppl, but from that, it was just ok! Lol, I was in the rocket track, and it was ok, my mentor was strict as hell, wouldn't let us sit anywhere, but by her! I would have to say my fav fav person over there was Garric Scott, from ATL Georgia! Fucking awsome dude! Well, as I said before, it was just ok! Lol, Macey, were you on the seventh floor? I could have sworn that there was a girl named Macey on my floor! And that she was tellin everyone she was gonna be in American idol? Or maybe totally wrong person!
Seven is heaven, baby! lol
I was the one that said that I was going to go on American Idol. That's me! You got it right. Did you hear me sing or something?
Plus, I did not know what floor I was on, LOL.
Yeah Macey, you were on the seventh floor with me! lol, you sang for the karaoke night, kelly Clarkson...A moment like this! lol
I wish I had gone. I know the "george W. Bush" impersonator who did the talent show though. lol.
lol yeah...he was really good! lol
I did sing Kelly Clarkson. Did you say you didn't go? If you didn't, then how did you know what I sang then? Just curious.
Hello all I wason the nine floor it was ok there need to use a hole week for and the lunch room was hard, I was in the eng track build a bridge but it was ok going as a student. I like how there got us to the bus from the air port. but the three day when we had to get on the bus I didn't get on with my pod. and they need to give more time to get to one clue to the next. med people where helpful to me and clean me up good.
I don't know if any of you who went know this already, but this weekend we are going to some leadership academy in Baltimore. It's some follow-up to the Youth Slam, I believe. Hopefully, if any of you all are going, I will probably meet you there. And I'm leaving this afternoon. Hope to see you all there!
Macy
PS: I think that after we go, we should post what we liked about it and stuff like that.
Ok, not all of us went, but there are more scheduled in the next months. I went and I thought it was all right. Whenever you guys go, post about it. Hope to hear from you all soon!
I liked the leadership academy. They had teamwork activities where we had to use our leadership skills and stuff like that.
I think I remember you singing that, in fact, I may hve met you. My first name is Jennifer, that's what I went by there. They wouldn't have let me use Iyana. I think I was on the eighth floor. Yeah... it's been a while. That was the only place I've ever felt included. I loved it!
I don't remember you at the Youth Slam. I don't remember your name either.
